Are Beats headphones over priced?

Beats headphones once used to be all about style and less about substance. This was the story at their time of launch and a few years that followed thereafter.

When they were first launched by the Dr. Dre brand, the music sounded over-processed. It used to be bass heavy. Moreover, the headphones used to be over-priced.

But now, things have changed for better. The sound is extremely high quality. It surpasses all things in the class.

The only things consistent with the initial Beats headphones models is the sky high pricing. However in a sale, one can get a model at a discounted pricing.

Even while the Beats headphones are priced towards the higher side, one must definitely go for the headphones if they amuse one’s senses. But a look at the alternatives too is a nice idea. Going through the reviews helps.

Beats does have some fine alternatives in its collection. BeatsX is probably the best all-round Beats headphones. It features a minimalistic design and a number of features supported by AirPods. AirPods nevertheless come with true wireless technology. But BeatsX also has AAC codec support. So an iPhone user can use them easily.

Similarly for athletes, Powerbeats 3 meets the bill in the best of ways. The appearance is clunky and the earphones feature an ear-hook design. This allows the headphones to stay nicely in place while one workouts. Otherwise, headphones tend to slip off when one goes out jogging. Adjusting the headphones time and again would not be required.

Another advantage of Powerbeats 3 is that they feature 10.5 hours of playback, and keep going on and on. One has a choice at using them all day. With their size, they are not easy to misplace. One can use them for workouts each time one goes ahead with the same, through the week. There is no need to recharge them iteratively.

For a certain consumer cross section demographics, Beats comes across as the choice to go for. They work the best for fashion conscious consumers. The headphones are best defined as trendy. Post-2014 Beats headphones feature W1 chip as well, which ensures compatibility with iPhones.

What can we say about the future now that Spot the robot dog has a commercial?

It was in the year 1873 that Benjamin Franklin saw the first ever manned flight using a hot air balloon. This was achieved by the Montgolfier brothers.

He was questioned about the practical utility of such a thing. Franklin responded by asking the practical utility of a new born baby.

The story of Spot, the dog-like robot created by Boston Dynamics lies on the same lines.

Spot was earlier known as Spot Mini. The production version of the robot will soon be up for sale. But it is available for sale only to select partners. They either have a compelling utility for a robot. Or they have a development team which Boston Dynamics believe can do something interesting with the robot.

The numbers of early adopters will be limited, because potential purchasers must all be possessed with the aforementioned qualifications. Similarly, the price tag of the robot will be high as well. One can afford a top line car for this price.

Spot can do stuff like climb or descend stairs or uneven surfaces. It is hence useful for applications such as inspection of oil and gas sites. Boston Dynamics have committed that they would not be selling Spot for military applications. The enterprise is addressing safety concerns.

A few of the consumers are looking at availing Spot for applications such as getting them a cola from the fridge. But Boston Dynamics have presently limited Spot to legitimate applications only

Spot is unique in certain ways. The robot has been created to be a worksite assistant, and features a 14 kg payload capacity.

The robot finds applications in hazardous environments. This may further go on to include applications such as remote data-collection, confined space entry using sensors, bomb disposal and search and rescue operations.

Spot may be defined as a solution on a lookout for a problem. The way Boston Dynamics are going about with the processes is commendable. They are presently partnering with customers in order to develop solutions to their problems.

Keeping the platform flexible is a remarkable feat, and so is the development of control systems that take away the complexity associated with kinematics. The controls of the robot are intuitive, much similar to a gaming console.

How Close Can We Build Robots to the Real Thing?

Building robots is nothing new – there have been DIY kits for years that would make what we call ‘Phase 1’ robots – which are basically coffee machines that do 4-5 basic movements. The difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 robots is learning.

In the past a DIY kit would contain the assembly parts required to make a piece of metal that would make lots of noise and other things – but really it was just a pre-programmed object.

Phase 2 robots are ones that can learn from their environment and build a digital neural net. There are a couple of things to know – at this point – the home robot hobby kit niche is exploding – all though many people don’t know about it.

There are a number of things you should know about Phase 2 DIY robot kits and how the industry is changing:

It’s All In the Cloud

A neural network to learn from their environment simply requires too much processing power for most DIY robot kits. By putting the processing and storage in the cloud a new world opens up. This is expensive – and htere is a monthly cost to connect to a service like AWS – but doing so will give the robot access to a powerful server computer that can learn and build an AI for the robot as it learns.

This would require your robot to be able to connect to the internet. This is easy with a WiFi switch which can be purchased for around $20-$40.

Putting your robot in the cloud and tapping into the computing power of a mainframe server is one of the most important things for Phase 2 robots.

Image Processing

A robot needs not only to have a camera to see out into the world – but he needs multiple video input devices in order to create a 3d map of his surroundings. Our robots will all have at least 3 cameras to create the depth of field necessary for the robot to render a 3d space.

This 3d space is then sent to a mainframe to process and learn from.

A high quality camera is also required for something a lot more subtle – to recognise the facial expressions and faces of the people around the robot – and to be able to start building a database.

In military situations – a robot would need to know who is a threat and who is a friend. Facial recognition is essential – this is the area where the biggest strides will be made. The I/O problem will be the biggest challenge that future robots will need to do to pass the Turing Test.

First they need very good input and then they need to process the information they receive and create output that would make the person connect with the robot.

Movement

Finally – movement is one of the biggest challenges that robots have right now. While walking seems like second nature for us – in the robotics world – simple things like walking and picking up objects is the holy grail.

There is a lot of things that we as humans do – that we don’t really think about – but are things where we know more than what we know that we know. In other words things as simple as picking up a soft fruit like a tomato without squishing it – by testing its firmness and knowing how to hold it – is something robots struggle with a lot.

All of these things require progress in robotics – but right now robots are very limited in their ability to move around. Getting a robot to simply move from one area of a flat surface to another on bipedal (two legged) physical interface is still a challenge.

Robots provide a lot of ethical challenges – and in the future we may see lawyers like Walker Law Group representing robot clients!
